Dr. Susan D. Newman is an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing. She received her Ph.D. in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Clemson University. Dr. Newman is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse with clinical experience in acute inpatient medical rehabilitation, caring for individuals with a variety of disabilities. Her experiences as a rehabilitation nurse provide her with a unique perspective and insight into the needs of individuals with chronic disability. Over her career, Dr. Newman has developed a special interest in and fondness for working with individuals who have sustained spinal cord injury.

Dr. Newman's research reflects her understanding that the availability and accessibility of appropriate resources in the community plays a significant role in the process of adapting to life with a spinal cord injury and in an individual's ability to continue to function as a productive member of society with a chronic physical disability. Her research interests include application of community-based participatory research approaches to address issues affecting community participation, health, and overall quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality, the SCTR Pilot Projects Program, and the Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation. Currently, she serves as PI on a NIH funded K23 Career Development award: A Peer Navigator Intervention for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury.

Dr. Newman is a member of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, American Public Health Association, Southern Nursing Research Society, and Sigma Theta Tau. She currently teaches in the PhD program at MUSC College of Nursing.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication.
