overview Dr. Alberg is a Professor of Public Health Sciences and holds the Blatt Ness Distinguished Endowed Chair in Oncology. In his role, he has acted to forge links between the Hollings Cancer Center and the leadership of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control to foster joint cancer-focused initiatives, including development and evaluation of the State Cancer Plan. Working collaboratively with other Cancer Control scientific leaders, Dr. Chanita Hughes-Halbert and Dr. Marvella E. Ford, Dr. Alberg is also developing initiatives that will integrate cancer population science into other Hollings Cancer Center research programs, an essential element in working toward this Center's eligibility to become a comprehensive cancer center. Dr. Alberg’s primary research interests include nonmelanoma skin cancer as a risk factor for subsequent noncutaneous malignancies; cigarette smoking, including the health effects of secondhand smoke; etiology of tobacco-associated malignancies; and tobacco prevention and control. Dr. Alberg has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications related to cancer epidemiology and cancer prevention.
