Prabhakar K. Baliga, M.D., is Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery, Medical Director of the Transplant Center, Director of the Kidney Transplant Program, and Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He has been a faculty member in MUSC’s Department of Surgery since 1992 and currently holds the Fitts-Raja Endowed Chair at MUSC.
Dr. Baliga has co-authored articles in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications. He has served in several leadership positions for the United Network for Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (UNOS/OPTN), most recently as Region 11 Councilor for the UNOS/OPTN Board of Directors. In addition, he has served on four committees of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. He is a member of 15 professional societies, including the American Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the International Liver Transplantation Society. Among his awards and honors was his being named as Honorary Director of the Department of Surgery in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, China in 2011. He was listed in Who’s Who in America: Best Distinguished Doctors 2009.
Dr. Baliga has been the Principal Investigator (PI) for several grants funded by the Health Resources Services Administration and the National Institutes of Health to study programs designed to increase organ donations.
Dr. Baliga holds a medical degree from Madras Medical College (India). He completed his residency in general surgery at Tulane University, followed by a fellowship in transplant surgery at the University of Michigan and post-doctoral training in the Department of Urology at Tulane University.
