overview Dr. Wagner's research focuses on the integration of medical and behavioral aspects of pediatric epilepsy by incorporating epilepsy self- and family management, thus targeting comprehensive care of youth with epilepsy and their caregivers. As Principal Investigator, Dr. Wagner has been funded by the national Epilepsy Foundation (EF), Parents Against Childhood Epilepsy (PACE), the Pediatric Partnership for Epilepsy Research, and the Willy’s Fund for Childhood Epilepsy Research. Her projects have encompassed predictors of depressive symptoms and examination of coping skills and self-efficacy for seizure management in youth with epilepsy; development of a depression screening tool specific to pediatric epilepsy (NDDI-E-Y); development and pilot-testing of a cognitive-behavioral self-management intervention targeting the enhancement of primary and secondary coping skills in youth with epilepsy and their caregivers (Coping with Epilepsy: COPE); and examination of caregiving processes in parents of youth with epilepsy. Dr. Wagner has a current proposal submitted to conduct a randomized controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of COPE. In addition, Dr. Wagner has contributed as a Co-Investigator on two previously funded and one current epidemiological studies of epilepsy health related outcomes and comorbidities funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (A. Selassie, PI). She are also participating in a national validation study of the PedsQL epilepsy modules. Dr. Wagner collaborates with other researchers across the US who focus on behavioral aspects of pediatric epilepsy, including investigators at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium ( http://pediatricerc.com/ ) and the Managing Epilepsy Well Network (MEW). Dr. Wagner is co-chairs of a MEW Work Group to review the pediatric epilepsy self-management literature (http://web1.sph.emory.edu/ManagingEpilepsyWell/research/workgroups.php) and holds leadership positions in the American Epilepsy Society (AES). She is also a member of the Psychobehavioral Treatment Task Force of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). Finally, Dr. Wagner collaborate with South Carolina Advocates for Epilepsy (SAFE; www.scepilepsy.org ), the non-profit advocacy organization for persons with epilepsy in SC.
