overview Akos Varga-Szemes, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Radiology and Director of Cardiovascular Imaging Research in the Division of Cardiovascular Imaging at the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Varga-Szemes received his M.D. from the University of Pecs in Hungary in 2007. After receiving his M.D., Dr. Varga-Szemes did an internship at the Heart Institute of the University of Pecs and began his Ph.D. studies in the field of cardiovascular MR imaging. To expand his research opportunities, Dr. Varga-Szemes joined as a Research Associate to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2008 to conduct MR contrast agent development. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Pecs in 2013, Dr. Varga-Szemes joined to the MUSC Department of Radiology as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Varga-Szemes has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals and several scientific abstracts presented at national and international meetings. He has received multiple societal awards including the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Regional Fellowship Award and the American Heart Association Young Investigator Award. Dr. Varga-Szemes is a member of major national and international radiology societies including the Radiological Society of North America, the North American Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. He is a reviewer for numerous scientific journals and is a distinguished reviewer for the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Dr. Varga-Szemes has served as a principal investigator on grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health. His primary research interests include state-of-the-art MR imaging of myocardial pathologies with special emphasis on ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction and the development of unenhanced MR angiography techniques.
