Perry V. Halushka, M.D., Ph.D. is a Distinguished University Professor of Cell and Molecular Pharmacology, the Program Director of Medical Scientist Training Program, and dean emeritus of the College of Graduate Studies. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1967 and M.D. degree in 1970 from the University of Chicago. After internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital, he spent two years at the NIH, Experimental Therapeutics Branch. In 1974, he joined the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Halushka¹s research has revolved around molecular characterizations and regulation of Thromboxane A2 receptors in health and disease. "The long term objective of our research program is to determine the role of thromboxane A2 receptors in disease processes with a particular emphasis in cancer. In collaboration with Drs. Omar Moussa and Dennis Watson we have found that there is an over-expression of the beta isoform of thromboxane A2 receptors in bladder cancer tissue and cell lines. The over-expression is associated with a poorer prognosis in patients with bladder cancer. Current studies are focused on determining the mechanisms for: 1) the over-expression of the receptors and 2) the signaling pathways involved in the oncogenic effects. The observations made in these studies may have wider applicability to other cancers."

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
